2018 Goal: Don’t Let Your Memory Slip

It’s hard to imagine that someone would intentionally let their memory slip. Analogy, if your sight was going, your hearing declining or your belly was getting too big — would you do nothing? Of course not. However, the memory is unseen and it’s not completely clear to others if it is not working until it may be too late. It’s easy to hide it in the beginning, thus we tend not to focus on it until it’s too late. It is especially easy when you are not-so-bad-off. However, you know when there’s been a change. Listen to your inner voice.  Like a stroke, the early months and years for recovery are exponentially important for improvement and slowing down of the aging process.

I hear all the time from clients, family, friends about strategies they use for improving their memory. Today I heard about vitamins. Yesterday I heard about attention and biofeedback. Last week I heard about an app that was guaranteed to help–and didn’t.

If you know something has changed due to aging  or stroke or other neurological changes; Or if you have always had a ‘learning difference’ such as working memory challenges, disorganization (logistically or cognitively=executive function) it’s time in the new year to get a program going that will actually improve your skills.

While we can’t stop the aging process, we can slow it down. We can change the trajectory of growth and neural activity by doing exercises and learning strategies that grow the parts of the brain specifically that help with improving recall of directions, to numbers and names to new and old information, to time management and dates and many more areas that relate to executive function.
